Liposuction is a surgical procedure and there is anesthesia involved as well as the invasion of your body. Both these factors introduce risks to the procedure. When undergoing liposuction they will inject a combination of lidocaine and epinephrine under the skin of the area that will be liposuctioned. This combination serves to both numb the area and to slow the bleeding in that area.
Your cosmetic surgeon will then make a small incision and insert a hollow instrument called a cannula into the incision. This is attached to a vacuum that sucks the fat out from the area being shaped. It is a very simple and common practice these days, but still caries some risks.

There are several very common side effects from liposuction and these are bruising, swelling and misshapen areas. In addition some temporary numbness in the area are common as is scarring and wrinkles or loose skin.
